A documentary film could help put Peace River on the map, and town council agrees.
Peace River’s town council said at the municipality’s Oct. 27 meeting, they would approach other municipalities around the area and find funding for a documentary on the Peace Region.
Nationally renowned folk singer and Peace River native Krista Hartman thought up the idea, and has the support from a director in Toronto to help produce the film. “It’s a dream of mine to showcase this town,” said Hartman. “And I think with some funding we can realize this project.”
Council decided that it did not have enough information to make a financial contribution for the project, but the town would try to muster up surrounding support as the project comes into fruition.
Hartman said that right now the documentary is in the preliminary and planning stage, but that she hopes to start filming in April of 2009. At that point, financial support would be needed to create a preview trailer for the film. The total cost of the documentary is projected at $60,000, however the immediate funding needed for the preview trailer is $15,000.
“It’s certainly worth looking at,” said Peace River mayor, Iris Callioux during the council session. “My thoughts are we take this to other municipalities and perhaps discuss this together and then be in a position to commit funding.”
According to Hartman, the film is going to highlight some of the fantastic cultural, historical and geographical intricacies that Peace River holds. The Peace River valley will be featured in one section of the 45-minute documentary, as well the Francophone and aboriginal communities in the area.
“It’s time to evolve as a community,” said Hartman. “We can feature the best parts of the area in a contemporary way. “It’s time to step up. My mom describes this town as a hazy Sleepy Hollow town and I want to get people to wake up and put this place on the map.”
Once made, the flick will be presented in film festivals across the country.
